Chapter Nine
That following Friday I raced home, not to prepare for my regular date with Reuben, but to check the mailbox to see if yet another postcard had arrived. I nearly squealed with joy when I saw the corner of the black and white photograph poke through the pile of boring, white envelopes.
“There are times when I lay awake and wonder what I can do to show you how much you mean to me. Every action pales in comparison to the feelings I have for you. So I simply wait and pray on some level you know. Do you know?”
I nodded a bit in response, even though I knew he wasn’t speaking to me. I took the postcard immediately to its sacred keepsake box under my bed. I abandoned the old cardboard box months ago, and was glad now there were new treasures to tuck in the back to continue this romantic, if doomed, love story.
It rendered me more quiet and thoughtful than usual during my date. Reuben was quick to pick up on my somber mood. He took my hand in his. “What’s wrong, Caitlin?” he asked. “Are you still sore at me because of last weekend?”
I shook my head but I also pulled my hand back. It would be impossible to explain. He reached into his pocket and produced a little black velvet box. “Don’t allow one unfortunate incident to stop what’s growing between us,” he said. “Haven’t I shown you the depths of my feelings for you?”
My eyes shot to his. It was so déjà vu, so exactly what my postcard writer had written. I felt immediately chagrined. Here was a man who declared genuine feelings for me and I was hanging onto the words that belonged to some other girl. It was silly. I opened the box to find a pair of ruby earrings. “My birthstone,” I said. “You remembered.”
He took my hand back in his. “Of course I do.”
I smiled. He reached for a kiss, but somehow it didn’t match the intensity of the ones I enjoyed before the postcards returned. It was almost as though I could give myself more freely to a man I’d never meet than a flesh and blood man who was in my arms. What was wrong with me?
It was definitely a step backward, but Reuben seemed to respond well to the reinstated boundaries. Like he had promised, he was a patient man.
That following weekend he was scheduled to return to Europe for business, which freed up my time for the friends I had somewhat neglected for the few weeks prior. It coincided right with my birthday, which was why Reuben had offered the earrings a little early. The guys knew just how to lift my spirits rather than let me pine alone at my house.
They took me to a club in West Hollywood with one of the area’s most popular drag shows. When “Madonna” took the stage I laughed in spite of myself. I would have recognized my neighbor anywhere.
